He has to search his feelings and his connection to the Watcher's Council. And in this story he has the opportunity to face serious challenge to his position as the ultimate "authority" as a watcher in decision making in the group. In the canon story, due to no one really taking Giles to task, he reluctantly went along with the Council to perform the Cruciamentum thingy on Buffy's 18th birthday. And IF I was plopped in the same same position as Giles, I would totally not be on the side of the Watcher's Council, so I would make vastly different decisions. I wasn't raised the way he was, I wasn't part of a Watcher family. But then I realized that me and Giles.have nothing in common, besides being male. Mostly because I would have been supremely annoyed by being treated that way. For example, I was momentarily irritated by how the females treated Giles by slapping him and berating him giving him the cold shoulder for weeks. And the funny thing is that if they hadn't released that virus to attract government's attention, they could have totally done what she suggested and gotten away with it, lol! There were a few things in the story that momentarily irritated me, but I could see the sense in them for character progression and storytelling. So when she claimed the insurance and inheritance, she would be under investigation for literally years. But in our "modern" society they would soon find out that the fire wasn't an accident, that it was deliberate. I mean, in a D&D campaign, no one would blink twice if they set a building on fire like she suggested. It's just a bit sad in this chapter that Desia couldn't get her totally legit suggestion to burn down her parent's mansion with the leeches in it accepted. So I applaud you in bringing those skills to a real world story without getting mired in all the numbers.

A lot of the time when I'm going through D&D manuals and spell descriptions, there's just so much damned information that I feel like I'm stuck on the tropes web page, clicking, scanning, and never really getting to the meat of the thing cause I've got so much more to click on and read. Part of what I love is how Xander/Alex uses the skills of the Artificer in the modern world, and how you explain it.
